Right now, 500 light years away from Earth, there’s a planet that looks a lot like our own. It is bathed in dim orangeish light, which at high noon is only as bright as the golden hour before sunset back home.
NASA scientists are calling the planet Kepler-186f, and it’s unlike anything they’ve found. The big news: Kepler-186f is the closest relative to the Earth that researchers have discovered.
It’s the first Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone of another star—the sweet spot between too-hot Mercury-like planets and too-cold Neptunes— and it is likely to give scientists their first real opportunity to seek life elsewhere in the universe. “It’s no longer in the realm of science fiction,” said Elisa Quintana, a researcher at the SETI Institute.
But if there is indeed life on Kepler-186f, it may not look like what we have here. Given the redder wavelengths of light on the planet, vegetation there would sprout in hues of yellow and orange instead of green.

PAck your bags its time to go to the new world.
Are you kidding… ? 500 light years away? Do you know how far is a light year? Let me explain. A light year is the distance light travels in a year. Light travels at 299 792 458 m / s. That’s METERS PER SECOND. Making a light year 9.4605284 × 1015meters. In case you don’t know your exponents. Its 9,460,528,400,000,000 meters. I can’t even say that number in English I don’t even know how. THIS planet is THAT number multiplied by 500! The point that I’m trying to make is that we wouldn’t make it to that planet in a thousand years, not even 10,000 years. Let’s just enjoy the fuck outta this one and take care of it and have sex everyday, and not be dickheads to people, be nice. Because in all honesty this planet is all we got.
No matter how long or how full of a life he lived, there will ALWAYS be great sadness losing someone of this magnitude. He was more than just a man; Mandela was an amazing servant leader, a freedom fighter & truly a King among men.
There’s something great about a man that can serve 27 years in prison, gain his freedom & forgive his oppressors.
Thank you Nelson Mandela for fighting to dismantle the legacy of apartheid, poverty, inequality & institutionalized racism. Thank you for showing us how to fight for our people.
May the spirit of Mandela live on through us by learning to love those who hate us, forgive those who do evil to us & forever lift one another up & fight for freedom from oppressive institutions.
LONG LIVE MADIBA!
